Senator DiDomenico has filed Amendment 257 to provide funding for four essential legal initiatives to remedy problems that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated for low-income people across the Commonwealth.

Using this form, please ask your state senator to support Amendment 257, which would use federal American Rescue Plan Act funding to: continue to fund legal representation for low-income people facing eviction; expand civil legal aid in healthcare settings through Medical Legal Partnerships; reduce educational inequities faced by low-income students in public schools; and stabilize struggling families at risk of separation because of poverty.

I write to thank you for the hard work you and your Senate colleagues are doing to allocate federal American Rescue Plan Act money to help the most vulnerable residents in Massachusetts who have been so severely affected by COVID-19. I urge you to support Amendment 257 filed by Senator DiDomenico. It would direct the funding to essential programs that address COVID’s impact on low-income residents and advance racial, gender, health, education, and economic equity. Specifically, it would fund: 1) Housing and Eviction Representation for eligible low-income tenants and landlords of owner-occupied two-and-three-family homes; 2) Medical Legal Partnerships to reduce health-harming legal needs and promote health equity; 3) High Quality Education for All Students, especially students of color, English language learners, students from low-income families, and students with disabilities, who are being disproportionately affected by COVID; and Legal Services Family Preservation to reduce the number of children who enter the foster care system due to underlying poverty problems exacerbated by COVID, such as inadequate housing, food insecurity, and family violence.
